Youth shines in 40 Overs Plate Match

Max Symes
13 year old, Max Symes shone in the 40 over Plate match against Melrose.

Windward's Second Division played the final day of their League match against Inch Marlow on Saturday June 25th with the visitors having a first innings score of 128/7. The Sagicor supported home team declared with 129/6 at the beginning of Saturday's play having secured first inning points, and put Inch Marlow back into bat for their 2nd Innings. At the lunch break Inch Marlow had managed 85/6 and were bowled out for 99 runs 20 minutes later. The Lucas Street Lads needing 99 to win from 32 overs. With 8 runs needed to win, umpires brought the match to a premature end at 6:08pm, siting poor light, resulting in a draw. Team Captain Andrew Lythcott had this to say about the match. "In my opinion, Inch Marlow wasted plenty time and only bowled 18 overs of the 32 that should have been bowled in the 2 hours of play that was available, changing wicket keepers no fewer than 4 times." The Second Division's next league match is against George Park at The Glebe, St. George this Saturday.

Playing their first 40 Over Plate match on Sunday against Melrose Sports Club and winning the toss, skipper Andrew Lythcott elected to bowl under overcast conditions. The Lucas Street Lads held the visitors to 75/2 in 16 overs, and 6 overs later had taken 2 more wickets compliments of 13 year old Max Symes, the scoreboard now reading 98/4. Three overs later Symes struck again, taking his third wicket of the day, and ending with figures of 38/3 from 8 overs on the day. Max could have ended the day with 5 wickets if not for a couple drop chances in the field. Melrose knocked up a score of 177 in their 34 overs. Opening the batting for Windward were Tony Edghill and Micah Stuart, who quickly went about opening their respective accounts, Edghill getting 19 runs and Stuart 26 in the early overs. By the end of the 18th over, Windward had made 87/2, Stuart now on 41, he would end the day having made 68. With 9 overs remaining and 8 wickets in hand, and with a score of 130 runs on the board, the skies began to turn dark, and with 6 overs remaining the clouds released a deluge, washing out play with Windward having 139/5, resulting in Melrose being awarded the win for having a higher overall run rate. Their next match is against North Stars at Crab Hill, St. Lucy on Sunday.
