Youth Shine in Second Division Loss

Kemar Carter batted well against the Police bowling attack

Windward's Second Division side hosted the Royal Barbados Police Force cricket team on Saturday September 19th in a rain shortened match. Due to heavy rains and gusty winds during the morning, water had seeped under the covers, wetting the wicket, delaying the start of play by two and a half hours, and the umpires deciding that each side would be allowed 5 overs to bat when play began. Having won the toss, the visitors opted to put the Sagicor backed side into bat first, with Kai Rollins and Taurean Best having the honours of opening the batting for the home team. Rollins made a quick single on the opening delivery, and Best followed suit two balls later, putting Rollins back on strike, when Rollins hit Ramon Harewood for 4 runs. The pair scored 8 runs in the opening over, but on the first delivery from Dennis Murray in the second over, Best lost his wicket, being caught by Carl Marshall having scored 2 runs, and bringing Lamar Springer to bat. Springer scored four runs from three balls before being caught by Shepherd, bringing Ken Mason to the crease, the score 12/2 in 2 overs. Rollins wicket was next to fall in the very next over, with him having made 9 runs from 6 balls he faced. Captain Andrew Thornton replaced Rollins at centre and made a quick single from the first ball he faced, putting Mason on strike. Mason wasted no time, hitting a 6 from the errant delivery by Deon Broomes followed by a single. Unfortunately Mason was run out shortly after, having made 7 from 4 balls and the scoreboard reading 23/4 in 3 overs. Next to bat was Graydon Sealy Secondary pupil, Kemar Carter, who has been working on his batting technique during Thursday practices at the club. Carter got off the mark with a quick single, putting Thornton to face his third ball of the match, when he was stumped by the wicket keeper off the bowling of Carl Marshall, the score now 24/5 in the fourth over, bringing vice captain Dindial Ramrattan to the crease. Ramrattan and Carter added a further 6 runs to the board, when Carter was run out on 6 runs from 7 balls and the score now 30/6. Elon Davis joined Ramrattan at centre and the pair added a further 4 runs before Ramrattan was run out, bringing Niyim Joseph in to bat. Davis was returned to the clubhouse shortly after, bringing Andrew Browne to finish up the innings with Joseph, with the Lucas Street lads managing 34/8 in 5 overs.

Taurean Best opened the bowling for the Green & Gold from the southern end, and allowed 6 runs during his one over with the ball. Kai Rollins was given the second over and allowed 11 runs during his over. Youngster Elon Davis was given the ball for the third over, and he rewarded the captains decision by taking the first wicket of the innings, that of opener Deon Broomes who had made 14 runs, and allowing a paltry 3 runs, ending his over with the score on 20/1 with 2 overs remaining. Dindial Ramrattan bowled the fourth over, giving up 8 runs and the visitors needing 7 runs from 6 balls when Richard Cox was given the ball to end the innings. Ian Shepherd hit Cox's first delivery for two, followed by a single on the second delivery, taking the score to 31 with 4 balls remaining. Donico Sargeant hit the next ball towards the boundary, where Ken Mason was waiting for the catch, but was unable to hold onto the well struck ball, and it fell past the boundary rope, giving the police the win by 9 wickets having scored 37 runs. Pictures from the days match can be viewed on our website and facebook page.

The Second Division have a bye this weekend, while the Intermediate host Pickwick at 1:30pm on Saturday.
