Winning Weekend for Windward

Alan Branch hits 4 runs during Masters match
Branch lifts one for four towards the club house.

In what was a match filled weekend for Windward, with Masters and Under 17 Cricket as well as our Tennis team playing Saturday, and our Under 13 cricket squad playing on Sunday, we could not have wished for better results. Our Masters side played their first match of the tournament against Maxwell Cricket Club, who were coming off a win the previous week, scoring 182/3 in 18 overs against Melrose. The visitors won the toss and put Windward into bat, with Captain Alan Branch and Tony Edgehill having the honours of opening for the home side. After a few quick singles in the opening 5 overs, Branch and Edehill got into the groove and started punishing the bowling, hitting 6 boundaries between them in the next 18 balls, and bringing the score to 50 in 8 overs, before Maxwell changed the bowling attack in hopes of reining in the run rate. This strategy did not go according to plan, as the score had increased to 74 in the next 4 overs, when Branch was dismissed LBW on 47 off of 35 balls in 47mins at bat. This brought Jasper Seymour to the crease, and with Edgehill, added a further 10 runs to the board when Seymour was dismissed Leg Before Wicket three overs later. Geoffrey Map strode to the center with an air of confidence as he was about to face his old team mates, having played for Maxwell in the past. The pair of Edgehill and Mapp then went to work and added a further 24 runs in 5 overs, bringing the score to 108/3 in 20 overs when Edgehill was dismissed LBW. The remaining 15 overs became the Geoffrey Mapp show with him making a total of 57 runs not out, as partnerships with Andre Archer, Andrew Lythcott, Ian Durant, and Nick Shepherd, all ended with these batsmen making a combined total of 26 runs. When the final ball of the 35 overs was bowled, Windward had amassed 188/7 with Mapp 57 not out and Charlie Thornton on 4 not out. After a brief tea break, the Sagicor supported home side took to the field, and their aggresive fielding was rewarded when Maxwell's opening batsman, Wayne Squires was bowled out with 10 runs by Archer in the 3rd over with the score on 12. When the next wicket fell in the 10th over, the score had advanced to 46 and things were looking up for the Christ Church team, but thanks to tight bowling from the "evergreen" Winston Chase who ended the day with 2/23 in 7 overs, and Richard Cox, 3/19 in 7 overs, the score had only advanced to 81/5 at the end of the 20th over with a run rate of 7 per over required. Nick Shepherd and Geoffrey Mapp rounded out the WCC bowling attack, with Shepherd having 0/25 in 6 overs, and Mapp having the impressive bowling figures of 3 wickets for 2 runs in 4 overs. Maxwell ended the day on 123/9 in 35 overs, giving Windward a 65 run victory.  The Masters next match is on Saturday 15th against BCL.
