Toppin Helps Windward Topple Yorkshire.

On Sunday, Windward travelled to Friendship, St. Michael to play Yorkshire’s Elite Division team, having just being promoted at the end of last season. Winning the toss and opting to put the home side into bat first, Adjani Watkins opened the bowling for the Sagicor supported Windward side, but was punished by the bats of Brathwaite and Watson, taking 10 runs off the over. Spinner Matthew Alleyne settled things down in the next over, taking the wicket of Watson on his third delivery, and the score on 12/1. Shakeem Blades took the wicket of Brathwaite in the next over, when he was caught by Williams, and the score having moved on to 21/2. Alleyne struck again in the 4th over, taking the wicket of D. Boyce who had made 9 runs from 9 balls faced and the score now 31/3. Rico Wiggins would be next to feature in the wicket haul, taking that of S. Richards who had made 23 runs from 20 balls faced and the score now 77/4. The pair of I. Persaud and A. Best then partnered for 69 runs in the next 6 overs, when Persaud was finally caught by Cherran Thompson off the bowling of Maxwell Lewis with the score now 146/5 with 4 overs remaining. Lewis took the two following wickets as well, with Blades taking the catches of V. Wilkinson and S. John-Ruck. Best ended the innings with an impressive 94 not out from 49 balls, and Yorkshire had amassed a score of 198/7 when their 20 overs ended.

Opening the batting for the Lucas Street Lads were the pair of Jafari Toppin and Tennyson Roach who set about to chip away at the Yorkshire lead. At the end of the 2nd over they had put up 26 runs, they then added a further 18 in the next 2 overs. By the end of the 6th over, the score was now 73 without loss, and the pair brought up their century partnership in the 9th over. At the end of the 10th over, Toppin was 100 not out and the scoreboard showed a score of 132/0. Roach was finally dismissed by S. Richards, having made 36 runs from 26 balls faced, and bringing Rico Wiggins to join Toppin in the middle. Player/Coach Toppin continued to punish the Yorkshire bowling attack, making a further 52 runs in 5 overs, when he was caught by D. Boyce off the bowling of J. Broomes, and the score now 195/2 with 5 overs remaining. Wiggins would end the innings with 10 not out and Windward won the match by 8 wickets. They next play Gladiola at Rices on the 22nd, then Spartan at Queens Park on the 23rd.
