Second Division T20 Champs

Windward’s Second Division trounced the undefeated Lords on Saturday the 10th of June when the BCA T20 Plate Finals took place at the Desmond Haynes Oval in Black Rock, St. Michael. Winning the toss and inviting the St. Lucy team to bat first the Guys in Green & Gold got off to a brilliant start, claiming the wicket of opening batsman Mario Boyce on the 4th ball of the opening over without a run having been scored. The pair of Kemar Goddard and Daveion Roach attempted to settle things down with a second wicket partnership of 58 by the end of the 7th over when Roach was caught by Ronnico Ross off the bowling of Rashoun Archer, bringing Shonquono Stanford to join Goddard in the middle. Goddard would be dismissed in the very next over, having been the victim of a run out attempt which found both St. Lucy men standing at the strikers end, and neither wishing to concede. With the score now 60/3 at the end of the 8th over, the Lucas Street Lads continued to apply pressure, dismissing Stanford LBW for 5 the very next over. With the scoreboard now reading 65/4 the pair of Juvall Hinds and Khalid Springer once again attempted to make a stand for the Lords from Lowlands, having a 19 run partnership which lasted 4 overs. Hinds was caught by Windward’s Vice Captain, Glenmar Hinds off the bowling of Kai Rollins with the score having moved to 84/5. Springer would be Leg Before Wicket 7 balls later having just a single run in his account, and the Windward side showed no signs of letting up, taking the wickets of skipper Andre Brathwaite, who managed to score 2 runs, and Justin Strickland who had made 18 off 15 balls, in the 17th and 19th over respectively, the score just 115/8. Ross would claim the final pair of scalps with his first 2 balls of the last over, bowling Damian Hinds, then getting an LBW decision against Shaquille Farley. The Windward bowling attack of Sadiki Nurse, 2/12, he would later be named man of the match for his efforts, Kai Rollins, 1/15, Ronnico Ross, 2/15, Elon Davis, 2/16 and Rashoun Archer, 2/37 did an incredible job of holding the powerhouse from the north to 119, having lost to them on May 6th by 26 runs.

BCA Secretary Gregory Nicholls presenting Sadiki Nurse with the Man of the Match award having figures of 4 overs, 1 Maiden, 2 Wickets for 12 runs.

After the lunch break, Alan Branch and Glenmar Hinds opened the batting for the St. Philip side and quickly set about with the task at hand, with Branch launching a six over cover in the opening over, sending the many supporters who were on hand into shouts of jubilation which quickly became a collective sigh of relief when Hinds was dropped shortly after Branch’s smash, with the pair having scored 10 runs in the over. The opening pair continued to carefully select their shots, defending when needed, and punishing any errant ball and by the end of the 4th over had taken the score to 25 without loss. Hinds would then have his turn to smash a six, sending it over the sight screen at the Carlton Club, taking the score to 38/0 after 5 overs. Hinds would continue to punish the St. Lucy bowling into the 9th over, when Boyce bowled him, Hinds made 52 off 40 with 5 fours and 4 sixes along the way, which would bring Elon Davis to join Branch with the score now 68/1. Branch and Davis would bring up the 100 in the 15th over but the partnership would be ended when Davis was caught on the boundary having 10 runs from 22 balls. Branch would be joined by Ronnico Ross and the pair continued to put up runs on the board, carrying the score to 117/2 at the end of the 16th, then adding the final 3 required runs with 3 overs to spare. Branch would end the day with 48 not out from 34 balls, hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes during his innings.Windward skipper, Lamar Springer, credited his teams success to a good mix of youth and experience, with the majority of the players being under 30, the only exceptions being Branch, and Andrew Lythcott, who have been playing for the Green & Gold for over a decade. We await word from the BCA on the opponents for the start of the 40 Overs and Super Cup formats which bowls off on June 24th.
