The Novel Sports supported Windward under 13 cricket team have had highs and lows the previous two weekends. On Sunday March 5th, they faced Carlton Juniors at Lucas Street, where they won the toss and decided to bat first, with Malakai Pooler (pictured right) and Alex Armstrong opening the batting for the Lucas Street Lads. Armstrong’s wicket was the first to fall with scoreboard showing 16 runs from 6 overs, bringing Michael Symes to the middle to join Pooler. Unfortunately Symes, who scored 50 not out the previous week, struggled this time at bat and was caught out with 1 run to his credit. Captain Dhaniram ‘DJ’ Dharamdeo (pictured left) took his guard and quickly set about putting runs on the board, making 20 runs from the 25 balls he faced when he was run out, bringing Ben Shepherd in to bat. Shepherd was quickly returned to the pavilion having failed to make an impact on the score, and was replaced by Stephano Springer, who got off the mark quickly, but was soon in need of a new partner, as Pooler’s wicket finally fell with him having made 23 runs from 53 balls faced. Alex Bowe joined Springer in the middle, and the pair added a further 54 runs to board when the innings ended, Bowe on 20 not out from 48 balls and Springer with 14 not out from 35 balls, and Windward having made 140/5. When play resumed after lunch, the Windward bowling attack made short work of the visitors, holding the visitors to 108 all out in 32 overs, with Dharamdeo having impressive figures of 2 maidens, 2 runs and 1 wicket from 4 overs, while Alex Armstrong had 2 maidens, 7 runs and 2 wicket from his 5 overs, and Aaron Blackman took 2 wickets for 18 runs in his 5 over with the ball. Windward won the match by 32 runs.
The following week Windward hosted Pickwick Juniors, who had won one of their previous two matches. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first and showed early on that this was going to be a tough one to win with their first wicket being taken in the 15th over, and the score on 77. When the next wicket fell, the score had moved onto 136 in 22 overs, and 7 overs later it was 198/3. Pickwick ended their innings on 249/4, with captain J. Parris having 52 runs from 36 balls, and S. Thorne 53 not out from 36, each having batted for almost an hour. Malakai Pooler ended the day with 1 wicket for 26 runs from 5 overs, Dharamdeo allowed 29 runs during his 5 overs and Alex Bowe took 1 wicket for 30 runs in his 5 overs with the ball.
After lunch Pooler and Armstrong opened the batting for the Lucas Street side, but struggled against the very quick bowling that the Foursquare side had. Armstrong was first to be returned to the pavilion, having 1 run from 10 balls faced and replaced by vice captain Michael Symes. Pooler was next to go having made 22 runs from 33 balls faced, and was replaced with Dharamdeo. Symes and Dharamdeo also struggled against the seamers, Symes making 2 runs from 19 balls faced while Dharamdeo fared little better with 5 from 16. Windward wickets continued to tumble, with Michael Cossey making 6 from 17 and Levi Rowe 3 for 14. Ben Shepherd ended his innings with 10 not out from 25 balls, and he was joined by John Massiah on 7 not out from 26. The Windward juniors managing 162/7 in their 35 overs, handing Pickwick victory by 87 runs. Windward plays their final match of the regular season on Sunday March 19th when they host the St. Catherine’s Barracudas at midday at Lucas Street.
