Windward's Intermediate side started the knock out section of the BCA T20 Shield Tournament on Saturday when they hosted BWU Gladiola Sports Club under sunny skies at the Lucas Street ground. Losing the toss, the Sagicor supported side were put into bat first, a mistake the visitors would later regret. Opening the batting for the Lucas Street Lads were player/coach, Jafari Toppin, and Latrell 'Buffy' Greenidge, and the pair quickly opened their respective accounts, each hitting boundaries, and ending the opening over with a score of 16/0. By the half way mark of their innings, Windward had racked up a score of 105/1, with Greenidge being caught having made 42, and being replaced by Captain Alan Branch. Just one over later, the scoreboard showed 132 runs when Branch's wicket fell, bringing Naje Bishop to join Toppin in the middle. Toppin would lose his wicket when he was caught at deep square leg having made 100 runs from the 42 balls he faced, hitting four 4s and twelve 6s during his time in the middle. Windward would end their innings having made 213/6. Opening the bowling for the Green & Gold was the 'evergreen' Winston Chase, who had celebrated his 76th birthday earlier in the month. Chase wasted no time, taking the first wicket on the second ball of the opening over, when Toppin took a catch in slips. Chase would strike again in the fifth over, and ended his spell capturing 2 wickets while giving up 23 runs in 4 overs. Kai Rollins and Rashoun Archer were also responsible for capturing 2 each of Gladiola's wickets, Rollins taking 2/30 in 2 overs, and Archer 2/9 in 2.1 overs. Gladiola ended the day with 184 all out in 19.1 overs, with top scores from Randy Thomas who scored 78, and Kyle Franklin with 25. Windward will face JCB Boscobelle on Saturday May 28th at Maxwell Sports Club, Briar Hall, Christ Church. Spectators are welcome. Covid protocols must be followed.
