2020 A Good Year Despite Pandemic.

Updated: Oct 18, 2021

"The world was turned upside down in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic and few organizations or clubs were spared the repercussions. Windward was no exception. In

spite of this, we can look back at the year with a high level of satisfaction at what was

achieved during the challenging times". This was the message delivered by incumbent President of the club, Richard Cox. During his address to the club members on Saturday's AGM, Cox sited the improved results of the Junior cricket teams, headed by Alan Branch with assistance from Richard Armstrong, and the addition of new young members to the Intermediate side as steps in the right direction as the club's focus on the youth and it's future existence continue to be of concern as it heads into it's centenary year. He also lauded the tennis team for it's third consecutive championship victory, and praised it's captain Andrew Thornton and Vice Captain Lee-Anne Thornton for their efforts on and off the court. From a financial stand point the club remains in a sound financial position due in large part to successful fund raising efforts in the form of Quiz Nights, Movie Nights and of course an extremely successful play. The President thanked Entertainment Secretary, Clyde Gibson and his team, Bar Secretary, Charlie Thornton and his team, as well as the play's writer, Lindsay Farmer, and Directors Richard Marshall and Ronald Watson for their combined efforts. Expenses for the 2020 financial year were higher than some may have expected, as during the island shut down due to Covid, the club undertook significant repairs to the clubhouse, replacing the ceiling by the bar which had been damaged by termites, replacing rusted galvanised sheets on the Eastern length of the roof, replacing broken window panes, and repainting the entire clubhouse. Cox thanked John Thornton and the building committee as well as groundsman Ian Stoute for their work. The President then recognised all sponsors for their support during a trying year, with special mention to Sagicor who is working closely with the club in it's development. Club officers for 2021 remain largely unchanged, with Richard Cox returning as President, Charlie Thornton as Vice President and Bar Secretary, Mark Corbin as Treasurer and Clyde Gibson as Entertainment Secretary. Paul Gill stepped down as Club Secretary and was replaced by Paul Allen, who has served on the committee previously. Other Members serving on the committee of management are; Edward Clarke, who also heads the 100th Anniversary Committee, Alan Branch, John Thornton, Michael Hutchinson, and Sean Thornton, who replaces Richard Armstrong.

There were a few changes in the team captain, vice-captain roles for the 2021 season. Shae Branch now captains the Intermediate team with Sean Thornton as his vice captain. Andrew Thornton and Dindial Ramrattan remain Second Division captain and vice captain respectively, and Lee Anne Thornton returns to the position of vice captain for tennis which she held in 2020 with Andrew Thornton resuming the position of captain. Selectors for the club are Alan Branch for Intermediate and Second Division cricket, Winston Chase for Masters cricket, and Rick Tuarel for tennis. The members who will represent the club at the BCA are Winston Chase and Andrew Lythcott, while Marc Sampson will be the representative at the BTA. The floor was then opened to general business and head of the Centenary Committee, Ed Clarke gave a brief overview of plans to celebrate this milestone starting in October with a friendly cricket match, a fun day where 'old time' members will be invited to come to club and reminisce over a game of dominos and darts and culminating in early November with a function at Foursquare where awards will be presented to outstanding members in the administration and sporting fields of the club. More details of these events will be shared closer to time.

The meeting adjourned at 7:00pm and was followed by a brief awards ceremony.
